Science Teacher 2024-25 School Year

Primary Purpose:
The High School Science Teacher will be responsible for designing science lessons and lab experiences according to the diocesan curriculum and ODE standards, that reflect and align to the STVM science curriculum and program goals. The candidate will also provide students with appropriate, engaging, and dynamic learning activities designed to foster critical thinking skills through learning experiences.  Enable students to develop and recognize skills in science that can be used and applied to other disciplines and to future learning.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Teach students to collect and/or use data to develop and/or evaluate scientific models.
  • Use primary research and scientific principles to communicate results and conclusions verbally and in writing.
  • Foster a collaborative atmosphere for students to work together to solve a problem.
  • Develop students' skills to review, understand, and evaluate data and concepts presented in peer-reviewed articles, graphs, infographics, new articles, textbooks, and video.
  • Consistently use lab experiences to learn and reinforce concepts.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of teaching the scientific method and laboratory best practices throughout the school year in each unit of study.
  • Develop and implement plans for the curriculum program assigned and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Prepare lessons that reflect accommodation for individual student differences.
  • Prepare lesson plans that engage, stimulate and instruct students.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional/learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflects accommodation for individual needs of students assigned.
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to Individual Education Plans (IEP) and/or accommodation plans.
  • Remain flexible, innovative and adaptive to change. Use technologies in the teaching/learning process.
  • Be proficient in using technology as an instructional and management tool.
  • Consistently use dynamic and varied ways to assess student achievement through formative and summative evaluation, while also giving timely feedback.
  • Present a positive role model for students that supports the mission of the school.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and is supportive to the emotional-social needs of students.
  • Utilize best practices to manage student behavior, enforce consequences, if needed, and follow disciplinary plans-of-action for students issued by the STVM administration or dictated by a student's learning plan.
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom.
  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents through email, phone calls, and/or student management systems.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on committees as required.
  • Any other assignment deemed appropriate by the principal.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in teaching Science from accredited university.
  • Integrated Science Certification is preferred but is NOT a requirement for this position.
  • Valid Ohio teaching certificate in Science.
  • Expertise in the field(s) of science that will be taught.
  • General knowledge of best practices of both curriculum design and effective, engaging instruction.
  • Ability to create engaging lessons to instruct students.
  • Strong communications, public relations, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Prior high school Science teaching experience and a student-teacher experience is preferred.
  • The position requires VIRTUS certification and FBI/BCI background check.
